Optimize Health conducted a national survey of independent physicians to understand more about patient perceptions and expectation of remote patient monitoring technology.
Remote patient monitoring, frequently called RPM, is a type of remote care program that uses connected devices to monitor patients’ health between office visits. Remote patient monitoring can deliver better outcomes, greater patient engagement, more revenue per customer and an improved experience for patients.
Let’s dive into the data to understand more about patient expectations of RPM.
Increased Patient Demand
Nearly 8 in 10 (78%) physicians say they expect steady or increased patient demand for virtual care. To meet their patients’ expectations, providers are currently offering or planning to offer a range of new remote care services that patients are asking about.
- 84% of providers are currently offering virtual visits or plan to offer them in the next year
- 46% of providers are currently offering remote patient monitoring or plan to offer it in the next year
- 44% of providers are currently offering remote therapeutic monitoring or plan to offer it in the next year
From the responses, we anticipate there will be the most growth in RTM and RPM, with 19% and 16% of providers planning to add these services in the next year.
Flexibility & Convenience
According to our physician’s survey, patients enjoy the convenience of remote care because it avoids the day-to-day challenges of bad weather, transport reliability and a lack of spare time. Overcoming transport challenges was a particularly important benefit for rural and out-of-town practices.
Within practices already offering remote monitoring services, practitioners say that patients enjoy using remote care services and are keen to continue using them, with patient feedback suggesting that once they become accustomed to the technology, they become strong advocates for it:
- “Most, once accustomed to a new technology… really like it.”
- “They love it tremendously.”
- “They are very appreciative and welcome the monitoring.”
A New Standard of Care
Physicians responding to our survey cited RPM as “the new standard of care for many patients”. Not only does RPM allow your practice to provide preventative care to your patients outside of office visits and get reimbursed for providing it, but RPM can deliver better clinical and financial outcomes for both patients and practices.
With Optimize Health’s RPM platform, patients achieved an 11-point reduction in their diastolic blood pressure readings and 5-point decrease in systolic blood pressure readings in less than three months. In less than 4.5 months patients achieved a 2.4 A1C reduction in their blood glucose measurements.
